Free Seed-Growing Workshop for Agriculturalists

Two, free workshops will be held for professional agriculturalists on seed growing. The workshops are Oct. 1 and 2.

The Oct 1 workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. and be done by about 5 p.m. Its topic is: Population, isolation and pollination considerations in vegetable seed growing according to plant families and will be presented by Nathan Corymb.

After a morning break, the group will discuss organic seed contracts and wholesale seed selling as an added income for an operation, quality and quantity balance, and planning to it into an operation. An organic/biodynamic lunch will be provided at 12:30 p.m.

The afternoon session includes a tour of Meadowlark Hearth seed fields followed by hands-on techniques for threshing, cleaning with machines and without machines for varied scales of wet and dry seed processing for both annuals and bienniels.

The second workshop will be held Oct. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The topics will include selection of roots for biennials; overwintering biennials such as cabbage; hands on demonstrations; forum for answering questions; and addressing comments. Though the workshop ends at noon, people are welcome to stay and have more hands on experience until 4 p.m.

Workshop expenses are covered by a specialties crop grant from the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.
