Tommy Strydom: A Farmer-Fighter Pursuing His Dreams in Nebraska
Nebraska Ag Connection - 06/01/2023

Tommy Strydom, a rising talent in the BKFC featherweight division, has found a unique way to make a living while pursuing his passion for fighting. As a member of the thriving South African farming community in Nebraska, Strydom combines his grueling work on the fields with dedicated training sessions to achieve success both inside and outside the ring.

Hailing from South Africa, Strydom is one of the approximately 26,000 South Africans currently employed on farms across the United States under the H-2A agricultural visa program. Residing a few hours away from Omaha on a farm in Nebraska, he works with cattle and contributes to the cultivation of crops such as beans and corn. Farm work demands early mornings and late nights, with Strydom waking up at 3 a.m. each day to ensure he has ample time for training.

Reflecting on his decision to pursue opportunities in the United States, Strydom explains, "I don't want to speak negatively about my country, but it has become increasingly challenging to find work and build a better future in South Africa. That's precisely why I made the decision to come here—to create a brighter future for my family.

Strydom's relentless dedication to his craft, both in the farm fields and the gym, paid off when he scored a spectacular knockout victory over Josh Krejci at BKFC 43. Despite the allure of becoming a full-time fighter and relying solely on combat as a source of income, Strydom's perspective differs.

Tommy Strydom's journey exemplifies the resilience and determination of an athlete striving to carve his path to success. With his relentless work ethic and unwavering focus, Strydom continues to pursue his dreams while flourishing within the Nebraska farming community.
