USDA Rural Development Celebrates National Small Business Week
Nebraska Ag Connection - 05/06/2021

Celebrating National Small Business Week is a tribute to the vitality of Nebraska communities and the individuals that call Nebraska home. USDA Rural Development offers opportunities to build on yesterday and plan for tomorrow, supporting economic growth and prosperity.

The USDA Rural Development's Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG) program provides support for rural small businesses. The many uses of RBDG funds and their ability to reach a large number of potential and existing entrepreneurs offer significant opportunities towards the development of small private business enterprises in rural Nebraska.

Eligible applicants for RBDG funding include rural communities, state agencies, non-profit corporations, Federally-recognized Tribes, and institutions of higher learning. Individual businesses are not eligible to apply. RBDG funds are used by the applicant to assist small and emerging rural businesses with targeted technical assistance, training and training facilities, including community commercial kitchens, business incubators, farmers markets and makerspaces. Funds may also be used to conduct economic development planning and for the establishment of revolving loan funds.

RBDG funds are making a significant impact in rural communities, training individuals to start their own market garden, harvest and sell their produce at farmers markets, expand their output to include weekly market basket sales and preserve foods. Small business technical assistance and training opportunities include basic business development planning and market outreach for local artists, Quick Books training and how to generate an internet presence via website development. RBDG funds have been used to produce a comprehensive community and economic development plan or a general small business and tourism specific assessment. Financial support provided a local college campus the ability to expand space and equipment needed for industry driven technical science programs. This expansion will support the training needs of regional industry employers.
