Red Nose Day: 157,000 Nebraska Children in Poverty
Nebraska Ag Connection - 05/26/2016

With about 157,000 Nebraska children receiving support from the state while living in poverty, Thursday's observance of Red Nose Day is a good time for citizens to increase their awareness of children in need of food, shelter and other necessities of life, according to Courtney Phillips, chief executive officer of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Red Nose Day is a global effort to raise awareness and money for kids and help them out of poverty.

"We encourage the people of Nebraska to look for opportunities to help children and their families in poverty," Phillips said. "We are fortunate to have many wonderful organizations deserving of our support that daily provide them with food, shelter and other basic necessities. With support from the community, these organizations can make a real difference in the lives of local families."

DHHS programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Child Care Support, Aid to Dependent Children, Medicaid, Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and others help to meet the needs of families and their children.

In recognition of Red Nose Day, DHHS employees will hold internal fundraisers statewide Thursday to increase awareness of children's needs in every Nebraska community. Funds raised and items donated by employees will be presented to local organizations that support children and the Red Nose Day drive.
