Apps Sought for New Nebraska Craft Brewery Board

Nebraska Department of Agriculture Director (NDA) Greg Ibach is encouraging eligible candidates to submit an application to become a member of the soon-to-be formed Nebraska Craft Brewery Board. The Board was created by statute (LB1105) recently signed into law by Governor Pete Ricketts.

"This is a great opportunity to build on the momentum of the rapidly growing craft beer industry in Nebraska," said Ibach. "It is important that we have broad industry representation on the Nebraska Craft Brewery Board as decisions are being made on marketing, research and promotional programs."

As directed in the statute, the board will consist of seven members to be appointed by the Governor on a nonpartisan basis. At least two board members will be selected by the Governor from a list of no fewer than 10 candidates submitted by the Nebraska Craft Brewers Guild or its successor organization. In addition, at least two board members will be selected by the Governor from a list of no fewer than 10 candidates submitted by the Associated Beverage Distributors of Nebraska or its successor organization. The rest of the board members will be selected from the pool of other candidates submitting applications.

To qualify as candidates, applicants must be citizens of Nebraska, at least 21 years of age, and either engaged or previously engaged, in the manufacture or the wholesale or retail sale of beer in Nebraska, or engaged or previously engaged, in the production in Nebraska of agricultural products that are utilized in the brewing process. Each member will serve for a term of three years and may be reappointed.

The law instructs members of the Nebraska Craft Brewery Board to meet within 30 days following the completion of the Governor's appointments. Representatives from NDA and the Nebraska Tourism Commission will serve as non-voting ex-officio members of the board.
