Shop, Learn and Grow at the Siouxland Garden Show

Just in time for spring, the Siouxland Garden Show comes to the Sioux City Delta Hotels Center April 5 and 6. The garden show will feature educational sessions, a winter farmers market, garden vendors, family-friendly fun and all things garden related.

"We look forward to hosting the show in April this year. This makes it possible for nurseries and vendors to offer a better variety of plants and flowers for sale," said Molly Hewitt, county director for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach -- Woodbury County. "New this year is the ISU Insect Zoo. It will bring fun, hands-on live insect education to the show on Saturday, from 1 to 3 p.m. The Insect Zoo and Children's Play Area provide a great time with educational activities for kids, and children 12 and under are admitted to the show for free!"

Experienced gardeners and gardening hopefuls of any skill level can grow their skills with educational sessions on topics such as starting seeds, culinary skills, garden insects, landscaping, weather and tree care.

"The presentations this year will be of interest to gardeners and homeowners," said Sherry McGill, ISU Extension and Outreach regional director. "There are a variety of speaker sessions and demonstrations to match anyone's interests and experience level at this event."

Educational speakers for the 2019 show include popular favorites such as Jennifer Hopwood of Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation speaking on how to help native bees and attract beneficial insects to your home; Iowa State's recently-retired extension climatologist Elwynn Taylor; syndicated columnist and author Jan Riggenbach; extension educator Kelly Feehan, Nebraska Extension; Todd Brockshus of Del's Garden Center, Jim Kessler, Iowa Valley Community College -- Grinnell; forestry specialist John Ball, SDSU Extension, and ISU extension entomologist Donald Lewis. There will be 24 educational sessions presented over the two days of the show, free for anyone to attend with admission.

Iowa Master Gardeners will be available throughout the show to answer all your gardening questions.

Over 40 garden vendors are attending to help gardeners get a jump-start on the growing season, and the winter farmers market hosts a great selection of local foods, handcrafted items and other farmers market favorites.

"The Siouxland Garden Show will help you grow your own gardening skills with expert knowledge, tested techniques and exciting vendor offerings," said Carol Larvick, Nebraska Extension educator.
