Looking at Disasters, Animal Ethics Through Theological Lens
Nebraska Ag Connection - 11/13/2018

Creighton University's next holder of the Anna and Donald Waite Endowed Chair in Jesuit Education analyzes natural disasters as moral challenges and animal ethics from a theological perspective.

The Rev. Jorge Jose Ferrer, SJ, currently works as a professor and director of the bioethics institute at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico and has a background in philosophy, moral theology and pastoral counseling. He will serve as the Waite Chair during the fall 2018 semester.

Ferrer has taught in the Department of Humanities at the University of Puerto Rico since 2002, and is currently revising his 2007 Bioethics textbook, Deber y deliberación. Una invitación a la bioetica. Before becoming director of the bioethics institute, Ferrer was a visiting chair at Seattle University.

In 2017, he gave a presentation titled "The Principle of Social Justice and the Ethics of Biomedical Research," at the XI Latin American and Caribbean Bioethics Conference. Ferrer has authored and co-authored four books and excerpts of his doctoral dissertation on HIV and its challenges with moral theology.

The Waite Chair in Jesuit Education was established in 2011 by Donald Waite, BSC'54, and his wife, Anna, to augment the Jesuit presence on the Creighton campus. The Chair sponsors visiting Jesuits who pursue writing, research and teaching on law, philosophy, business ethics, health care and more, opening doors for learning across international borders and cultural divides.
