Wheat Planting Moves Ahead with Another Dry Week
USAgNet - 06/04/2020

Another week of mostly dry conditions allowed for additional planting progress and most producers are wrapping up spring wheat planting. This week's USDA Crop Progress report indicated that about 91% of the U.S. spring wheat crop had been planted. Planting in North Dakota remains the furthest behind at 85% complete, while surrounding states show completion of 97% or higher. The average planting pace for this time of year is around 95%. North Dakota producers will likely wrap up any remaining spring wheat planting this week. Producers continue to report slow planting progress in portions of central and east central North Dakota for all crops. It is quite likely that those areas will see some prevent plant acreage.

About two-thirds of the U.S. spring wheat crop has emerged, compared to 80% on average. Not surprisingly, North Dakota is the furthest behind with about half of the crop emerged, compared to 78% on average. So far, crop condition ratings are relatively high with 80% of the total U.S. crop rated in good to excellent condition, compared to 74% last year. In North Dakota 82% is rated in good to excellent condition. Many producers are reporting that precipitation would be beneficial as topsoil is getting dry in many areas. The forecast for this week does show chances of precipitation towards the weekend.

Durum producers have continued to make good progress with 87% of the crop in North Dakota planted, slightly ahead of last year, but behind average. Just over half of the crop has emerged, also slightly behind average. Crop condition ratings have not yet been added to the USDA Crop Progress report. Much of the western part of the state is considered abnormally dry with some areas of moderate drought, so precipitation will be needed to help along the durum crop. In Montana about 80% of the crop has been planted, behind the five-year average.
